Hopkins & Allen Top-Break .32 Caliber Revolver, manufactured between 1909 and 1917
Description: This Hopkins & Allen top-break .32 revolver has a single-action/double-action, five-shot revolver, with a nickel finish, 3 ¼-inch barrel, fluted cylinder, ¼-inch-wide serrated folding hammer (i.e., folding spur), ¼-inch-wide, smooth-faced trigger, original hard-rubber checkered grips, fixed rear and front sights. There are no box, papers, or other accessories with this revolver. Year of manufactured is between 1909 and 1917. It is difficult to nail down the specific model of this this Hopkins & Allen revolver. The only Hopkins and Allen top-break revolver with a folding hammer that is listed in the Blue Book of Gun Values appears as the Forehand Model Folding Hammer. From what I have read, the Forehand Gun Company was the original manufacturer of the folding hammer revolver and was apparently called the Model 1901. The Forehand Company was acquired in 1902 by Hopkins & Allen which continued production of the model using the Forehand Gun Co. stamp and/or logo, though apparently not called the Model 1901. At some point, Hopkins & Allen added its own stamp, and by 1909, the Forehand Gun Co. stamp disappeared from the model. No model identification appears on this gun There are five sets of markings on the gun. The barrel top is stamped “HOPKINS & ALLEN MFG.CO.” (first line) and NORWICH CONN U.S.A.PAT JAN 5.OCT5.86” (second line). On the right side of the folding hammer spur is stamped “PAT’D” (first line) and “JAN.27.86” (second line). It might be 85, but the numeral is scratch and is not really legible. On the front of the folding hamer spur is stamped "510". The serial number, 8118, is stamped on the butt. Finally, “3368” is stamped on the rear rim of the cylinder between two of the chambers. One might get the idea that this is the serial number that does not match the number on the butt. However, that same number, 3368, appears on the inside of the front strap (frame) just around the corner from the serial number, 8118, which is on the butt. The overall condition of this gun is about 98 percent, pretty good for a 116+ year-old gun. It retains 99+ percent of its original nickel finish. The barrel is near perfect. The frame is in excellent condition - 99 percent. The cylinder is also in excellent condition, with one exception – one of the cylinder flutes shows some scratches to the nickel finish (see last photos). The front strap shows some very small nicks to the nickel finish. The cylinder lockup is tight. The original grip panels are in excellent condition. The gun has been lightly fired. There are no box, papers, or accessories with this revolver. The photos are high resolution, so zoom to see details.
