S&W .357 4" Registered Magnum Kornbrath Engraved
Description: Once in a great while an exciting firearm will surface that has remained hidden from collectors for decades. In 1935 Cleves Harrison Howell was the Chief Engineer of the county of Los Angeles flood district, he controlled where the water went. Mr. Howell was also an avid shooter and life member of the NRA. When he read about Smith & Wesson's all new .357 Magnum, he ordered one immediately. Mr. Howell was so impressed with "the most powerful handgun ever made" that he wrote D.B. Wesson praising his new revolver and ordering an engraved Registered Magnum for his son. Since it was ordered in 1936, this Registered Magnum has remained in the Howell family until now. However this exact revolver, #49672, is pictured on page #466 of Ed McGivern's iconic book "Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting" published in 1938. The same photograph is shown in Tim Mullin's "Magnum: The S&W .357 Magnum Phenomenon". This Smith & Wesson .357 Registered Magnum #49672/ Reg. No.1672 is one of only four documented, factory engraved Registered Magnums. According to Roy Jinks only 6.5% of all Registered Magnums were ordered with 4" barrels. This is the only documented, factory engraved, 4" barreled reg. mag. in existence. As noted in the letter this RM was sent by S&W, in the white, to be engraved by master engraver Rudolph J. Kornbrath. This revolver is fully and completely documented including the registration certificate, a letter from Roy Jinks and 8 documents, associated with this gun, from the Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation. The magnificent full coverage engraving is beautiful acanthus and scroll in typical Kornbrath deep relief with punch dot background. The side plate features a panel depicting a Grizzly Bear, no doubt an homage to the Bear Flag of California. The bottom of the trigger guard carries the initials C.C.H. to C.C.H. Jr. inlayed in gold. I'll be happy to talk more about this utterly unique Smith & Wesson revolver or send more image but for now I hope you'll enjoy these images. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes |
