1882 mfr. Antique COLT FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER Model 1873 .44-40 WCF Revolver Black Powder Frame .44-40 WCF SAA

Description:
1882 mfr. Antique COLT FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER Model 1873 .44-40 WCF Revolver

Black Powder Frame .44-40 WCF SAA

Here we present an antique Colt Frontier Six-Shooter Single Action Army Revolver in .44-40 WCF, manufactured in 1882 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Colt Frontier Six-Shooter was Colt’s Model 1873 revolver manufactured in .44-40 Winchester instead of .45, so that it was compatible with Winchester’s Model 1873 ammunition. These revolvers made excellent companions to rifles at the time as they were chambered for the same ammunition, meaning that the user only had to keep one type to feed both guns. The front of the trigger guard is stamped “44 C.F.” and the bottom of the barrel is marked “44”. Colt began offering .44-40 as a single-action chambering in either late 1877 or 1878.

Though Colt enjoyed the largest contracts of any handgun maker during the American Civil War, it had to rely on its array of percussion fired revolvers, namely the 1860 Army until the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. This enabled them to begin making revolvers with completely bored through cylinder chambers in order to utilize modern metallic cartridge ammunition in the most effective manner. In 1869, Colt began development of a suitable cartridge revolver in earnest, first coming out with a number of conversions for their percussion lines, until 1872 when they debuted what was to become the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army in the 1872 U.S. Trials. Needless to say, it won, and became the Army’s revolver of choice. It also became the sidearm of choice for many others like cowboys, guards, lawmen, crooks, shopkeepers and all manner of civilians.

The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The hammer has been replaced for functionality purposes, and it has good case colors; the original hammer will come with the gun. The action is excellent, holding all 3 positions and having all 4 clicks. The barrel was slightly shortened long ago by about 1/8”. The bore is in good condition, patinated with strong rifling. The grip is solid and in great shape. Serial numbers match.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 7-3/8 inches.
