Description: Up for review is an interesting .44 caliber pistol that belonged to deputy Marshal Buck Garrett working under Marshall J.J.Dickerson in Ardmore Oklahoma. He came to life in Tennesse in the year of 1871. When he was eight years old his family moved to Paris, Texas where he spent many of his teenage years struggling under the influence of both poverty and the death of his mother which occured when he was only ten years of age. He was forced to be pretty much on his own surving by shinning shoes and selling newspapers at that time. When he made it it to14 he joined forces with ranch hands on a large cattle ranch and punched cows until he reached the age of 19. At this time he moved to Ardmore, Indian Territory, where he eventually came under the influence of J.J. Dickerson in part due to his physical prowess as well as his ability with a gun. Actually according to available history he rarely used his pistol preferring to use his fists and fearless nature to deal with perpetraitors. Time saw him function as the chief of police in Ardmore and later sheriff of Carter County. A bit later in his illustrious career he became mixed up with the regulators in the 1892 Johnson County War when they were organized by Tom Smith and traveled to Wyoming to deal with dangerous outlaws. Not sure who the bad guys really were in this complex conflict but Garrett was arrested and eventually released from custody. He returned to Ardmore but because of some conflict with the KKK he was not re-elected as sheriff. During his tours of duty as a lawman he tangled with the worst of characters and along with his friend Bud Ballew they were able to put many non-lawabiders behind bars and some in their graves. He lived out his life in Ardmore but following a stroke in Oklahoma City which caused paralysis his wife Ida (Chancellor) Garrett, even though separated from him, returned with him to Ardmore where he passed away at age 58 years. They had but one son and his daughter Laura Garrett has authenicated the ownership of this pistol with a letter a copy of which is included in this communication. The pistol shows its age with a difuse brown patina and markedly aged ivory grips but all things work on the gun with all the hammer notches being present and the cylinder line up pretty much in keeping with what you might expect with a well kept old pistol. The bore shows the expected changes with the use of black powder. All the serial numbers that can be seen are correct and the patent date lines are quite distinct. Hopefully the photos will give those who might be interested in this pistol a look at its condition. I'm not exactly sure what a firearm like this might be worth so what I would appreciate would be offers over the course of the next short while and if they come close to what I paid for the gun back some 30 years ago it will have a new owner. If I can provide any further information regarding the pistol I will try my best to do so either via the G.I.site or the telephone. Thanks so much for your interest so far.
