Scarce Blued Remington 1875 Chambered in 44-40 WCF Good Condition
Description: SOLD Guns by Sally-always the best for less. We are super proud to offer this fine example of Remington's big single action revolver, the model 1875. Made to compete with Colt's 1873, it was a well made gun that hit the market a little late. The first production guns were chambered in .44 Remington, which also hurt sales. Remington did not land any US military contracts, but did have a contract to arm Indian police and sold many abroad to foreign markets. Most were nickel plated, but this offering is the much harder to find blued version. The icing on the cake is that it is chambered in 44 WCF, and ammuntion is plentiful. This early gun still has the pinched front sight and lanyard ring in the butt. The 3 calibers offered in the 1875 Army were a progression, not a choice. This is the only early model we have seen chambered in 44-40. Famous owners included both Frank and Jesse James, and Buffalo Bill Cody. Many were purchased by Civil War veterans that found trust in the family resemblance to the model 1858 they carried in the war. This particular 1875 is in very good condition, with the blue turned to patina. I often judge the overall condition of this model by how much of the barrel address remains. This one has a complete, and fairly clear address. The action is tight, with little play in the cylinder. The screws are very good, also. Even the bore of the 7 1/2 inch barrel is good, with plenty of shine and strong rifling. Considering that it was fed a steady diet of black powder ammuntion, the few scattered patches of light pitting are truly remarkable. The grips are also fairly good for the age of the gun, smooth with a little receeding at the edges. Now, if you really know the 1875, this model is typically stamped with a production run number on the grip frame. Other sellers will try to tell you that it is a "first year production" because they are typically a 3 digit number. Here, this wheel gun is marked 234. These original Remingtons are in short supply, and they command ever higher prices in most any condition. I will list this one for the same price as many of the half worn nickel guns I have sold. If you have been looking for the right 1875 to collect, or for investment, but want the extra clout of a blued version in 44-40, then look no further. Investors, take note. A similar gun sold for over 7000 dollars on 12-10-23. See the last photo. Reasonable offers will be considered.
