*CUSTOM* Smith & Wesson 1st. Mod. Double Action in .44 Russian. All mechanics, half-cock, single, and double action are perfect. There is zero cylinder slop when in battery. The bluing is in phenomenal condition, given its age as is the color case hardening on the trigger and hammer. The bore shows a few small blemishes but the bore itself is bright and shiny with strong rifling. The chambers in the cylinder are nearly pristine. My research thus far indicates this to be a custom ordered one-of-a-kind, literally unique, pistol. The lanyard ring and the barrel length (4-1/2") would both have been custom ordered from Smith & Wesson. This hits 2 categories of collecting; rarity and condition. Sadly, though period correct, the grip panels do not appear to be original to this pistol and one bears a faint script that seems to be Jan.28, That, and the small blemishes in the bore, are the only things keeping this from being museum quality. I am awaiting a letter from the Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation. If not available at the time of sale it will be forwarded to the buyer free of charge.
