Smith&Wesson tripple lock .44 special
Description: Listed here is a well preserved Smith&Wesson tripple lock revolver produced in 1915. Its condition is remarkable for its age and the bore is mint. The action remains smooth as most of these early pistols produced by the company were. The high polished 98% blue finish contains a few minor blemishes and the cylinder has a modest ring as most due when they've seen 107 seven years of life. The majority of these pistols were produced with 5, 5 1/2 or 6 1/2 inch barrels but this one has the more rare barrel length of 4 inches. From late 1907 to the end of 1915 a little more than 15,000 of the guns were developed in mostly the .44 caliber. According to some authorities a very few were produced in the .38/40 and .45 calibers. These were indeed rare guns. During early WW1 the British ordered around two thousand of these revolvers in the .455 caliber but their use in the muddy trenches of the then battle fields caused the delicate tripple lock mechanism to malfunction. Later guns delivered to the British soldiers were made without the under barrel protective encasement of the cylinder pin and so proved to be very functional and worthy firearms. As this early large frame pistol came into being it hearlded the onset of a type firearm that was to be the nudus of an assortment of guns by Smith &Wesson that evolved throughout the twentieth century. Quite a few mid century writers touted this gun as the best ever produced. Elmer Keith highly supported this model pistol and it was carried by the likes of Keith and Frank Hammer, the government agent responsible for taking down Bonnie and Clyde Barrow. In today's world with profit margins and sales being the only real manufacturing considerations pistols like this can not be produced. The cost would be prohibitive. I've taken a few pictures of the listed gun for your review and hopefully they will answer most questions. If not, either call or communicate through the G.I.site. Always remember that condition dictates the value of any iconic legendary antique pistol and time will never see it devaluation. Thanks for taking a look.
