Smith & Wesson Model 1917 Brazil Contract .45 ACP Revolver
Description: For sale is a Brazilian Contract Smith & Wesson 1917/1937 D.A .45 Revolver. The S&W Model 1917 revolver was designed to be used in WW I since not enough Colt 1911 pistols were available for war use. It took .45 ACP ammo using half moon clips, the same ammo as the 1911 semi auto pistol. In 1937, Brazil ordered 25,000 Smith & Wesson M1917s for its military, where they are no longer in service. They can be identified by the large Brazilian crest stamped on their sideplates and are sometimes referred to as the M1937, the Modelo 1937, or the Brazilian-contract M1917. There were 37,000 originally sold to Brazil. The first delivery of 25,000 guns was 1937-1938 in the 181983-207043 S/N range (with checkered S&W silver medallion wood grips and "square" rear sight notch), the second delivery of 12,000 guns was circa 1946 in the 1-210,000 S/N range (with plain wood grips and "U" rear sight notch) assembled from old factory stockpiled parts. Approx. 14,000 with heavy use were imported back to the US circa late 1980s. This gun is SN 173550 with matching numbers on the barrel, butt, and cylinder. And, in a first for me, and I've seen around 20 of these guns, it also has a matching serial number inside the right grip. It has matching production numbers, 55770, on the receiver and the yoke. It has the round rear sight notch and smooth grips indicative of the second delivery to Brazil. The stamps are all correct and crisp. The grips are worn, but not bad for its age with no cracks or missing pieces. The lanyard clip is present and in good condition. The action is crisp, lockup and timing are good. The bore is clean and crisp. The rear sight is straight and smooth, the front sight is slightly bent. The hammer and trigger are excellent. The overall finish is smooth, with some very shallow surface scratches. BlueBook of Gun Values values a 90% gun at $1150. This is not in 90% condition, but the Brazil contract guns are increasingly hard to find. Please refer to the pictures. The gun is designed to use moon-clips to aid in extraction. In addition, the cylinder is machined with the proper step-down to fire .45 ACP cartridges without a moon-clip. This requires the cases to be removed individually. A commercial rimmed cartridge, the .45 Auto Rim, was also developed, so these revolvers can eject cartridge cases without using moon-clips. It's not the best example of this model, but overall it's not bad, and will be a great addition to a collection, but more likely as a shooter for someone that appreciates its history.
