c1882 mfr. Antique CAVALRY Model “COLT 45” SINGLE ACTION ARMY Revolver SAA
“DFC” Inspected, Nickel Plate, Shortened to 5-1/2, Coin Front Sight
Description: c1882 mfr. Antique CAVALRY Model “COLT 45” SINGLE ACTION ARMY Revolver SAA “DFC” Inspected, Nickel Plate, Shortened to 5-1/2, Coin Front Sight Here we present an antique Colt Cavalry Model Single Action Army Revolver, manufactured in 1882 in Hartford, Connecticut. Though Colt enjoyed the largest contracts of any handgun maker during the American Civil War, it had to rely on its array of percussion fired revolvers, namely the 1860 Army until the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. This enabled them to begin making revolvers with completely bored through cylinder chambers in order to utilize modern metallic cartridge ammunition in the most effective manner. In 1869, Colt’s began development of a suitable cartridge revolver in earnest, first coming out with a number of conversions for their percussion lines, until 1872 when they debuted what was to become the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army in the 1872 U.S. Trials. Needless to say, it won, and became the Army’s revolver of choice. It also became the sidearm of choice for many others like cowboys, guards, lawmen, crooks, shopkeepers and all manner of civilians. This particular Colt Single Action Army Revolver is intriguing, to say the least. It features a 7-1/2 barrel that has been cut down to 5-3/8 inches and has part of a period coin serving as the front sight. The frame, barrel, and cylinder are initialed by David F. Clark, a U.S. Ordnance Inspector. Single letter sub-inspector “G” markings are also found throughout. The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.” The left side of the frame is marked with patent dates in the years 1871, 1872 and 1875. However, this one is not stamped with the “U.S.” marking that was the acceptance marking on the US Ordnance Department. This almost certainly means that while this revolver was fully inspected and worthy, it was an “overrun” that was not needed to fulfill the contract and therefore was sold by Colt’s on the commercial market. It was finished in nickel at some point as nickel is desirable for its corrosion resistant properties as well as its aesthetic. This is a well-used Single Action Army that functions very crisply and has the look of a gun that has ridden the dusty trails. The overall condition is good+. This one wears an old nickel finish. Strong, tight action all the way around. Very nice bore with sharp rifling. Sold walnut grip despite the chips and the obvious wear. Numbers match. A very neat old SAA from 1882! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 5-3/8 inches. Caliber: .45 Colt Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
