Colt SAA US Cavalry Henry Nettleton Inspected

Colt Single Action Army 
U.S. contract Colt Single Action Cavalry Model Revolver manufactured in 1878 and inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector Henry Nettleton (HN). Nettleton's distinctive "H.N." sub-inspection mark is stamped on (1) the underside of the barrel, (2) frame, (3) trigger guard, (4) top of the back strap, (5) cannot locate the HN on side of the cylinder (just the P and partial serial number), letters S and T are stamped on the back of cylinder, and (6) left side of the hammer. The right grip heel is marked with the over-stamped initials "H/N". The right side of the grip is stamped with the script initials "HN" in an oval cartouche. The left side of the grip is stamped with the date "1878" above the script initials "J.E.G" (Ordnance Inspector Capt. John E. Greer). The full serial number is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "7414” is stamped on the side of the cylinder and partial serial number is also stamped on the barrel. All of the visible serial numbers match. "P" proof marks are stamped on the bottom of the barrel above the "H.N." mark and on the side of the cylinder. A "U.S." property mark was stamped on the left side of the frame, so one years ago removed it. “S” is marked in the hammer slot. Cylinder pin screw is a replacement. Interesting enough this revolver is mentioned in Kopec’s book on page 322 as on the Henry Nettleton inspected Colts that never received the US stamp? The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Colt 3rd Style ''Bold Block Letter'' address. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt ''Three-Line/Three-Date'' patent markings ahead of the where the U.S. property mark was. The assembly number "5327" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate which matches number on the trigger guard. The ejector rod has the early ''bullseye'' head, and the hammer has the elongated ''Cavalry style'' knurling on the spur. Other interesting notes: bottom of the butt is stamped USSTNYC, not sure what the stamping represents and the name Howard Kinsley? is scratched on top of the ejector tube housing where it meets the barrel (see pics). 7 1/2” barrel with a decent bore, showing good rifling. Grips show faint cartouches on both sides. Overall finish is a gray / brown patina with very faint traces of blue in protected areas. This is a very interesting Henry Nettleton inspected Colt, he is one the hardest inspector to find for your Colt SAA collection. This SAA needs further investigation and research which could reveal some interesting facts. Henry Nettleton Colt SAA don’t come up for sale often, so don’t miss your opportunity.
