A Classic Colt with a Fascinating History!

Here we present an antique US Colt Single Action Army “Artillery” Revolver with the John Kopec Letter. John Kopec is the preeminent scholar of the SAA and has opportunity to study thousands of examples. He breaks down this artillery by part and number, offering a history of every part that has a number or inspector’s mark. As the letter says about this revolver “All, in all, this revolver does show more historical connotation than most. It appears to be totally original except as noted [noting the sanding and varnish on the grip]. There does not seem to be any indication of fakery or purposeful deception found on this Artillery revolver.”

The Artillery or Springfield Armory Model of the SAA is a period (1895-1903) armory or factory refinished gun to extend U.S. military service. Only about 17,000 of these refurbished guns were completed. The serial numbers will be mixed from the refurbishment. As Kopec notes in this letter, the frame (#17313) was manufactured in 1875 as a Cavalry model. While he wasn’t able to locate a record for this gun in the National Archives (they are vast but incomplete), he found that it did fall between two revolvers that were recorded as belonging to the 7th Cavalry at least as early as 1888. The 7th’s heritage is well known with relation to Custer and the Battle of the Greasy Grass. The trigger guard (#7084) was made in 1874 and bears the inspection initials of O.W. Ainsworth. This revolver could be traced back to the 5th Cavalry Troop C as early as 1884. The backstrap (#112684) is from 1884 and initialed by inspector David F. Clark. The barrel (#7403) is from 1874 and Ainsworth inspected. Again, revolvers in this range have been traced to Troop C of the 5th. The cylinder (#8529) was made in 1878 and inspected by Henry Nettleton. The letter contains all of this information and historical insight and more.
The overall condition is fine. Armory blue finish. The action is strong and crisp all the way around. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The left frame is stamped “US”. This is a wonderful example of a Colt Single Action Army with a storied past—from the Indian Wars of the late-19th Century, to the busting of labor strikes, the founding of Yellowstone Park, and the Spanish- and Philippine-American Wars.
