Allen & Thurber Primitive Grafton Dragoon Pepperbox.

Description:
First production model virtually unknown to the collector market. There are 3 specimens known and this one, #80, is fully marked overall including grips and interior.
Two maker's marks are present, both on the un-slotted hammer:  "ALLEN & THURBER GRAFTON MASS" on the side, and small "ALLENS PATENT" on the top.
Complete and original, this example exhibits all documented 1839 1st run features including fluted barrel ribs, removable nipples, wide backstrap ,non-recessed cylinder screw, "straight" trigger, main spring lug, and improved pittman and ratchet, as catalogued by Les Bassinger. Example #80 is identical to Example #4 as described by Bassinger, and #4 was further corroborated by Harold Mouillesseaux as "the first and rarest of the Allen Dragoons."
Sideplate, right frame and backstrap exhibit earliest typical engraving, and fully-varnished un-marred grips are without spangles or grip pins.
Condition is very good+ without finish. Very good mechanical action. Smooth frame with minor old pitting on the barrel and all original nipples showing wear.
