CIVIL WAR Era Antique C. SHARPS .22 PEPPERBOX Wild West RIVERBOAT GAMBLER
FINE Model 1 Pocket Pepperbox Revolver
Description: CIVIL WAR Era Antique C. SHARPS .22 PEPPERBOX Wild West RIVERBOAT GAMBLER FINE Model 1 Pocket Pepperbox Revolver Here we present an antique Christian Sharps Model 1 Pepperbox Pistol, made during its production run between 1859 and 1874 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Christian Sharps invented his famously large bore, breech-loading rifle in 1848, after practicing gun-making under John Hall at Harpers Ferry Armory. In 1859, he premiered another unique design in the 4-barreled pepperbox pistol with a unique revolving firing pin, made for 19th Century concealed carry. Production ceased with the death of Christian Sharps in 1874. This repeating design was able to utilize the new rimfire ammunition like Smith & Wesson, without infringing on Smith & Wesson’s Rollin White Patent for bored through chambers on a revolver’s cylinder. This gave Sharps a leg up in the market since everyone else either had to produce single shot pistols, come up with an alternate ammunition and weapon design, or just stick with percussion until the patent expired. They made very nice, easy to use and compact firearms for 19th century conceal and carry. We can see proof that a small pepperbox such as this one, made a pivotal impact on the industry and country, as Grantley Berkeley, in his book “The English Sportsman in the Western Prairies” shares after being presented with one in the fall of 1859. Berkeley was in St. Louis, Missouri at the time when he reminisced about the pistol…“The most perfect little bijou of a revolver I ever saw in my life… In size it is so small that I carried it in my waistcoat-pocket, and in execution so effective that at eight yards I could shoot as correctly, if not more so, than I could with my favourite pair of John Manton duelling pistols….” It truly was an ace in the hole for the gabling table, simply, to assure an honest game was played. The overall condition is fine. Original finish has been preserved. Excellent action. The bores are bright and nicely rifled. Markings are sharp throughout. Both grips are in good shape with minimal handling wear. Numbers match. The cigar box and accessories are in good shape. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrels are 2-1/2 inches. Caliber: .22 Rimfire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
