RARE ANTEBELLUM Antique BACON & CO. Percussion Underhammer PEPPERBOX Pistol SCARCE 1 of 200; Early Production Repeating Handgun
Description: RARE ANTEBELLUM Antique BACON & CO. Percussion Underhammer PEPPERBOX Pistol SCARCE 1 of 200; Early Production Repeating Handgun Here we present an antique Bacon & Company Percussion Underhammer Pepperbox Revolving Pistol, manufactured circa 1852-1857 in Norwich, Connecticut. This is one of the estimated 200 underhammer pepperbox revolvers manufactured in the years leading up to the American Civil War, during the latter part of Bacon & Company’s existence. History appears to show that Bacon went into the firearms production business on his own, forming Bacon & Company in Norwich somewhere around 1847, which he ran until 1857. These .31 caliber, 6-barreled percussion pepperboxes were quite unique within the realm of pepperbox handguns in that they were both single action and underhammer designs. The most common variant of pepperbox during that period was a double action only, bar hammer design, as typified by most of the guns of that pattern produced by Ethan Allen and his later Allen & Thurber and Allen & Wheelock companies. The guns produced by Bacon were produced in both ribbed and fluted barrel variation with barrel clusters in varying lengths. Most surviving examples have ribbed barrels, with the flute barrels being uncommon as well. The standard finish was blued with two-piece, oil finished walnut grips. As was common on many pepperboxes produced during this period, the gun was typically enhanced with simple scroll engraving on the frames and recoil shields. The 6-shot barrel cluster is marked "BACON & CO. NORWICH C-T". The history that these pistols enjoyed over the years is astounding: the Seminole Wars, Gold Rush, Mexican War and American Civil War. These guns are true relics of American history. The overall condition is very good. The action is excellent. The bores are smooth and patinated. Grips are solid. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 4-1/2 inches. Caliber: .31 Underhammer Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
