Big Bore Engraved Revolver with Turkish Retailer's Mark 1860s
Description: Assembly #3, .44 Caliber CF, 2 3/4" barrel with cannon muzzle and a very good bore with some minor freckling within the grooves. This is an interesting, Liege-proofed revolver that has a folding trigger, manual safety, and coverage floral scroll engraving. The metal retains 85% plus of the original nickel plated finish with the balance of the metal flaked to a lightly mottled pewter gray patina. Additionally, there are traces of the original gold wash finish remaining on the trigger, right front of the frame below the ejector, and on the swiveling ejector housing itself. The topstrap is engraved "J. NIKITITS ERBEN/CONSTANTINOPLE" and there are extensive Belgian proofs on both the frame and cylinder. The genuine mother-of-pearl grips are in very good condition with a single small chip missing from the toe of the butt on the right side panel. The revolver lock-up is still tight and the mechanism functions flawlessly. The entry in "Heer Der Neue St'ckel Vol. 2"; (1979), lists Nikitits Erben as a revolver maker and retailer ca. 1860 who sold Colt firearms. A check of the internet reveals firearms marked "J. NIKITITS ERBEN/ISTANBUL" which would mean that the company was in business at least until 1930 when Turkey officially adopted the name "Istanbul" over "Constantinople" for its largest city. This is a beautiful and and rare revolver with unusual features that has lots of original finish remaining in addition to a seldom seen Ottoman Turkish retailer's marking. It would make a great addition to any collection of high grade revolvers or European firearms. Antique SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: J. Nikitits Erben Model: Folding Trigger Serial Number: 3 Caliber Info: .44 CF Gauge Info: .44 CF |
