Description:
c1880s SAN FRANCISCO, CA Antique SHREVE & WOLF BULLDOG Revolver .44 Caliber

19th Century Import from Belgium to California

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Shreve & Wolf Bulldog Revolver, manufactured in Liege, Belgium circa the 1880s for Shreve & Wolf in San Francisco, California. There was a brief partnership of the firearms dealers at 214 Bush Street lasting between 1880 until October of 1886, at which time the business failed due to competitive pressures, according to one of the principals, George W. Shreve, when he was interviewed by The San Francisco Examiner outside of his home on Webster Street. In effect, the railroads and Eastern dealers did them in. He elaborated that the firm was used to selling to many customers both in the North, including Oregon, Idaho, and Washington, as well as in the South, such as Arizona, New Mexico, and even Mexico. In addition to importing guns from Liege, Belgium, they dealt in Colt, Parker, Merwin Hulbert, L.C. Smith, and others. Both Shreve and his old partner, Simon Wolf, went into business for themselves after the breakup, and Shreve went on to sue Wolf in April of 1887 for continuing to use the old signage, still with the Shreve name.

The overall condition is good. Nice nickel finish. The action of the hammer and trigger are strong, though the cylinder indexing is sometimes intermittent. The bore is frosted and maintains serviceable rifling. The sculpted grips feature an elephant’s head at the top and a winged dragon-looking creature at the bottom, and are in good shape with the left having been repaired. Liege proofed. .44 caliber--.44 Russian fits and the chambers are straight walled, but the gun is not marked as to chambering. “SHREVE & WOLF” and “STEEL BARREL” marked on the top of the barrel. Also features a lanyard ring. This would have been an attractive piece for self-defense in the tumultuous West, and would have competed directly with the likes of the Colt Model 1877 and 1878 or the Smith & Wesson double actions of the day.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 4-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .44 Centerfire (chambers .44 Russian)
