Merwin & Hulbert Spur Trigger .22 Caliber single action Revolver
Description: Merwin & Hulbert Spur Trigger .22 Caliber Revolver 3½" Ribbed Barrel – Nickel Finish – Excellent Condition Serial # 370 Description: Fine Merwin & Hulbert spur-trigger revolver chambered in .22 caliber, featuring a 3½-inch round ribbed barrel and a 7-shot fluted cylinder. Finished in nickel and fitted with factory rosewood grips, both grips correctly numbered to the revolver, a scarce and highly desirable feature. The barrel is roll-marked “MERWIN HULBERT & CO. NY”, with the barrel and cylinder matching the frame, confirming originality throughout. The revolver retains approximately 80% original nickel finish, showing light oxidation, scattered minor handling marks, and honest age wear. The barrel exhibits light oxidation with minor pitting, yet retains strong, well-defined rifling. Grips are excellent, with minimal wear and strong color. Mechanically works very good , with a smooth action, strong hammer spring, proper timing, and solid lockup. The cylinder stop on top is loose as shown in photos and probably needs a spring. This does not effect the action of the revolver. These revolvers were a copy of the Smith & Wesson 1st model 3rd issue. Rarity and Production: Merwin & Hulbert spur-trigger revolvers were produced primarily during the 1870s–1880s, a period when the firm was at the height of its reputation for precision engineering and innovative handgun design. While Merwin & Hulbert revolvers are highly regarded, spur-trigger .22 caliber examples are notably scarce, particularly those retaining matching numbered components, factory grips numbered to the gun, and a high percentage of original finish. Surviving examples are most often encountered in well-worn or mismatched condition. Collector-grade revolvers such as this—retaining strong original nickel, matching barrel and cylinder, and excellent grips—are infrequently offered and are actively sought by advanced collectors of American antique cartridge arms. Company Background: Merwin & Hulbert was formed in the late 1860s by Joseph Merwin and William Hulbert and quickly became one of the most respected American firearms firms of the 19th century. Partnering with Hopkins & Allen for manufacturing, the company gained prominence for its distinctive revolver designs, exceptional fit and finish, and mechanical quality that rivaled contemporary Colt and Smith & Wesson products. Merwin & Hulbert revolvers were widely marketed both domestically and internationally and are today considered among the finest American handguns of the period. Collector Summary This revolver represents an excellent example of a scarce Merwin & Hulbert spur-trigger .22, combining originality, strong remaining finish, matching numbered components, and excellent mechanical condition. A highly desirable collector piece suitable for advanced private collections or high-end offerings. This firearm is an antique and no FFL is required.
