Rare LeMat Cartridge Revolver with 1877 Patent Hammer
Description:
Serial #207, 11mm CF/15mm Shot, 4 1/2” octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves and at the breech-end over a 4 1/2” round, smoothbore barrel with some specks of mild freckling towards the muzzle.
This is an extremely rare revolver that has an armory bright finish that has dulled slightly over time to a bright pewter gray patina with a few scattered specks of mild freckling.
This model has the correct “COLONEL LEMAT PATENT” marking along the top barrel flat in a somewhat modern-looking sans serif font and has Belgian “E/LG” proofs as well.
Additionally, there are some further “(crown)/T” proofs on both the barrel and cylinder face which would seem to denote military acceptance by the Kingdom of Serbia, but that is only a tentative identification.
The gun has the early style shotshell loading gate with spring-loaded extractor (without manual assist), but does have the 1877 patent side-lever equipped hammer.
The cylinder ejector rod is slightly bent, but still fully functional, and indeed, the lock-up and mechanism is still tight and fully functional.
It should be noted that there is a small spring present at the lower front of the cylinder frame opening that exerts pressure on the cylinder face, pushing it into the ratchet and pawl.
This may be an original feature or a later addition, it should be remembered that these were as much prototypes as production guns.
The original walnut grips are numbered to the gun on the interior and have numerous small handling marks in the re-applied oil finish on both panels.
In their book “LeMAT, THE MAN, THE GUN”, Authors Val Forgett and Alain Serpette illustrate two examples of this type of revolver on either side of this serial number (numbers 37 and 217) and this example exhibits a mix of features and characteristics found on one or the other.
This is a spectacular example of a very rare, big-bore centerfire LeMat revolver with a possible, highly unusual military connection, and would make an exceptional and stellar addition to any collection.
