Tranter Model 1868 .500 cf
Description: This revolver was made in the 1874-1876 time frame and was retailed by E. M. Reilly of London. It is chambered for the equally rare .500 Tranter cartridge that drove a blunt nosed 350 grain bullet at 700 fps. This five shot revolver retains 90% nickel on the frame. The cylinder and butt cap nickel is mostly gone but the knurled bead and all line and foliate engraving is sharp. Checkering is all there but flat. For a 140 year old gun it is in excellent condition being well timed with a clean cylinder and functional bore with good rifling and a few minor pits. This 2 lbs. 4 oz. five shot .500 revolver is a fighting man's gun and far handier than the clunky .577s of the era. Sir Henry Morton Stanley must of thought so too because it was this model and caliber Tranter he bought from E. M. Reilly for his expeditions in Africa. In 45 years of collecting I have seen and handled 5-6 .577s of both major English manufacturers and this is the only .500 I have seen. A period style mahogany parlour case is included with a full set of ebony handled servicing tools to display this magnificent firearm along with some partially formed brass cases.
