U.S. SMITH & WESSON SECOND MODEL SCHOFIELD REVOLVER WITH SAN FRANCISCO POLICE MARKINGS

Description:
This is a very nice and historical Smith & Wesson Schofield Revolver. Comes with Smith&Wesson  Archive letter.
serial #7661, 45 Schofield, 7" ribbed round barrel with a bright near excellent bore. The cylinder of this revolver has been very neatly and lightly modified with recessed chambers to accept a .455 caliber cartridge but also appears to still permit the original 45 S&W Schofield cartridge. The metal surfaces retain perhaps 80-85% original bright blue with most of the loss due to moderate flaking to a pleasant gray-brown patina along the sides of the barrel and cylinder, light operational wear, scratches and handling marks. The hammer shows bold case-hardened colors scattered about with overall toning to mild gray patina while the triggerguard has mostly toned to a similar smooth gray with some good colors in the protected corners. A couple of the screw heads show some very light slot wear and many still retain remnants of bright fire blue. All markings remain crisp and clear with U.S. martial inspector stamps "W" and "P" stamped on the cylinder, barrel and frame and "US" at the butt. The revolver is also stamped just behind the hammer with rack number "284", these numbers believed to be San Francisco police inventory numbers. The smooth walnut grips remain in very good plus condition showing scattered light dings and dents and retain some really nice markings with "1877 / (DAL)" on the left panel and "(CW)" cartouche on the right. The right panel is appropriately stamp-numbered to the gun and the left is un-numbered. The barrel, cylinder and latch parts are matching the frame, barrel-to-frame fit is solid and the action seems to function well mechanically with excellent timing and lock-up. In his Man At Arms article "The San Francisco S&W Schofield" author Charles Pate details how about 300 revolvers were issued from the Benicia Arsenal to the San Francisco Committee of Safety due to riots in the city. It is believed the California Militia retained the revolvers as there was no record of them returning to the Federal Arsenal.
