Newark, NJ 7 shot. .22 cal.Long 3” octagon raised rib barrel Flat frame copy of the S&W Second Model Manufactured from April 1869 to February 1873. Serial number 16134. Total production only about 40,000 Made by Manhattan Firearms Company Seven shot cylinder with 14 cylinder stop notches 3 1/8” raised rib octagon barrel that tips-up for loading .22 long RF silver plated Brass frame with blued barrel & cylinder 2 Piece smooth walnut grips Roll engraved cylinder (Indian & Settler motif ) Barrel Marked: AMERICAN STANDARD TOOL CO. NEWARK. N.J. Brief Company History: The Manhattan Arms Company was a significant player in the firearms industry during the mid-19th century. Founded in 1856, it was based in Newark, New Jersey. The company quickly gained prominence for its innovative designs and quality craftsmanship, particularly in the realm of revolvers and pistols. Manhattan Arms Co. was a direct competitor to other renowned firearm manufacturers of the time, including Colt, Remington, and Smith & Wesson. Their firearms were highly regarded for their reliability and effectiveness, earning them popularity among both civilian and military markets. Condition: 3 1/8" octagon raised rib barrel with a nice overall shiny bore and strong rifling. Barrel and cylinder have toned to an attractive gun-metal gray patina. Rolled engraved cylinder , Indian and Settler motiif , and barrel markings are very clear and legible. The brass frame is mostly an ocher patina and still retaining some of the orinigal silver finish. The smooth walnut grips are in very fine condition retaining almost of the original varnish showing some minor handling marks. Very attractive grain figuring on the grips. The barrel to frame fit is tight . The action is functional with very good timing and lock-up. Due to their historical significance, limited production numbers,, Manhattan Arms Co. pistols are highly sought after by collectors of antique firearms. This pistol represents a rare and historically significant firearm. Its innovative design and limited production make it a prized collectible for enthusiasts of antique firearms.
