#4797 Savage 1860 Navy, 36-caliber percussion 7-1/8” barrel
Description: #4797 Savage 1860 Navy, 36-caliber percussion 7-1/8” barrel with dusty, dirty bore that looks like (after the spiders and wood wasps are evicted) it will at least clean to G-VG. What is REALLY interesting on this revolver is that it looks to definitely be an original factory nickel finish ….and has well over 80% of that finish remaining! It does have some high spots of thin rust where the finish has worn off, and there is dirt and grime both inside and out, which (to me) just adds to the charm of this VERY unusual and clumsy looking Civil War era revolver. It has a sharp, well struck frame address that shows NO evidence of any aftermarket refinishing and the grips are VG (….and the grips would have been “Fine” if some previous knuckle-dragging owner had not used the butt of this gun as a hammer and banged the daylights out of the bottom!) Also, like many Savage revolvers, the percussion nipples have been mushed over from many years of dry-firing …and the action is stiff and seems to be gummed up from years and decades of dust and cockroaches gumming up the innards. There is little doubt that this was NOT a military purchase, but being nickel and with no military proof marks, it most likely was a private purchase by an officer or wealthy young soldier. ….or maybe just some fat old store-keeper. Who knows?? Always a conversation piece at any cocktail party because of their ungainly and total butt-ugly appearance, the Savage revolver has always been a unique firearms novelty with good appeal.
