Description:
Antique SPRINGFIELD ARMS CO. Single Trigger NAVY Model PERCUSSION Revolver

SCARCE! 1 of only 125 Manufactured in 1850-51

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique engraved Springfield Arms Company Warner’s Patent Single Trigger Navy Model Percussion Revolver, manufactured circa 1850-51 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Springfield Arms Company existed only for a brief period in 1850 and 1851, making revolvers designed by its chief engineer, James Warner, before being driven out of business by Colt patent lawyers. During that time, Springfield Arms, which had no relation to the arsenal, made a variety of models in .28, .31, and .36 caliber and with a variety of barrel lengths and other features, including a well-designed safety notch to allow the guns to be carried fully loaded safely.

Warner designed two different revolvers, one with two triggers and one with only one trigger. On the one trigger models, he was blatantly infringing on Colt’s Patent and only made 125 of these. On the two trigger model, in an attempt to avoid patent infringement, Warner separated the cylinder rotation and firing mechanisms into two different triggers. The front trigger would rotate and lock the cylinder, and then it would trip the rear trigger which released the sear and fired the gun. This was not sufficient to save him from copyright infringement suits, though, and only about 125 of the double-trigger Navy revolvers were made.

Out of the 250 total revolvers manufactured, 125 single trigger and 125 two triggers, this example is serial number “32”, making it one of the first built, and realistically, how many total are known existing out of only 125 of these single triggers? Very few. Here is a great opportunity to pick up an extremely scare early 1850s revolver that you won’t see around very often.

The overall condition is good. Original, smooth dark gray patina. The action is strong. The head of the hammer is sightly deformed. Good bore for its age with serviceable rifling. Both grips have experienced an average amount of store and handling wear. Each side of the frame is engraved. Markings are legible. The right grip has 9 uniform, filled notches. The rear sight has been filed out in the middle.
