On many of the
CVA-imported Armi San Marco revolvers from the 1970s and early 1980s, the "Wells Fargo" models were intentionally produced with what collectors commonly call a
coin finish,
in-the-white, or
natural steel finish.
Here's how they were typically finished:
- Barrel and cylinder: Left bright or given a matte satin "coin finish" with no bluing. Frame and trigger guard: Brass, left uncoated. These naturally develop the attractive golden to honey-colored patina
- Backstrap: Brass.
- Hammer and trigger: / color case hardened
- Walnut grips: Oil-finished walnut.
Description
This revolver is an Italian reproduction of the famous Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver, one of the most successful percussion revolvers ever produced. Manufactured by Armi San Marco and imported by Connecticut Valley Arms during the 1970s–1980s, it replicates the scarce "Wells Fargo" variation by omitting the loading lever beneath the barrel. The name has become a collector's term for this configuration. The cylinder features the traditional roll-engraved stagecoach hold-up scene, copied from the original
Colt engraving and one of the most recognizable cylinder scenes found on percussion revolvers.
Historical Background
Samuel Colt introduced the original Model 1849 Pocket Revolver in 1850 as an improvement over the Baby Dragoon. Chambered in .31 caliber, it quickly became America's most popular personal-defense revolver before the Civil War. More than 325,000 were produced between 1850 and 1873, making it Colt's best-selling percussion revolver. It was favored by travelers, merchants, lawmen, military officers, and civilians because of its light weight and compact size.
The leverless version became known among collectors as the "Wells Fargo Model" because of its resemblance to revolvers associated with stagecoach messengers. Eliminating the loading lever made the revolver lighter and easier to carry in a pocket, though loading required a separate

MADE IN ITALY
Condition: serial #B6691, .31 cal, 4” octagonal barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel and five-shot cylinder are coin finished with some sparse scattered scratches and light impact marks around the wedge. The hammer retains about 98% case-hardened finish. The brass frame and grip frame have toned to a lovely goldenrod patina with a few light scratches and dings. The roll stamped stagecoach robbery scene on the cylinder is present though slightly softened. The smooth walnut grips rate about very good with some scattered handling marks and an area of wear at the top of the right side. The cylinder properly locks and times and the action appears to function very well mechanically.
