Colt
S/A 6-1/2”x44/40 …COPY!!
Description: #4945 Colt S/A 6-1/2”x44/40 …COPY!! However this is FAR better than the majority of all the many Single Action copies hat were made in the late 1800’s, and very likely this one was made under contract to be up to Colt qualifications. The left side frame patent dates almost look correct, but are not quite the correct Colt font or size. The barrel address also looks like a correct Colt marking, but has been partially obliterated, possibly to disguise the fact it might not be the correct spelling (…and of course Colt also did not make a standard 6-1/2” barrel length). It has a 44CAL stamped on the left frame under the cylinder, and serial number 83 on the frame. Such numbering is common on such copies and they are rarely seen with serial numbers in anything higher than three digits. The bore has what appears to be equal width lands and grooves and a LOT of wear and leading. I’d rate this bore as about a 2-3 on a scale of 10 due to the extreme wear, and the pitting is not so much of an issue, so it does look to possibly have some accuracy at shorter distances …..and after all, these were not intended to be target guns! A man was a pretty large and easy to hit target at 20-30 yards away! The exterior is smooth and does not show any of the abuse that these usually have. There is no pitting of mention, it locks up tight and in good tune, the two-piece wood grips are quite handsome original grips with just minor wear. It has the earlier style Bulls-Eye ejector which suggests a production date earlier than 1882-83. Overall this Colt “lookalike” is a GREAT holster filler at a VERY reasonable price! A similar Colt in this same overall condition would be nearly TWICE as much. $1495 SOLD Antique: Yes |
