"EXHIBITION-GRADE BELLE ÉPOQUE LIÈGE 5.7MM RIMFIRE MINIATURE REVOLVER (59648)
Description: "Signed and Executed by H. Leukers, Elaborate Relief Gold Overlay and Cherub-Themed Decoration, Cased An exceptional late 19th century Belgian Liège 5.7mm rimfire miniature revolver, executed in full exhibition finish and housed in its original fitted burl walnut presentation case. Crowned ELG and Perron proof marks date the revolver to the post-1893 Belle Époque period. Miniature revolvers of this type are sometimes referred to in period literature as “bicycle revolvers," reflecting their compact form and association with the late 19th century cycling era. Regardless of terminology, this example stands well above typical commercial production and firmly within the realm of decorative exhibition arms. The revolver is signed and decorated by H. Leukers of Liège, a late 19th century master engraver working within the Liège guild system. Leukers appears to have specialized in high-relief gold overlay and sculpted decorative programs. While examples of his work are scarce, this revolver represents by far the most elaborate example of his artistry we have encountered. The frame, barrel, and cylinder are profusely embellished with deeply chiseled relief gold overlay and inlaid foliate scrollwork over a finely textured matte ground. The cylinder is fully wrapped in raised gold vine work, and the barrel panel features a classical cherub rendered in sculpted gold relief. The decorative scheme is cohesive and technically ambitious, demonstrating strong control in both inlay execution and sculptural background work. Of particular note are the carved mother-of-pearl grip panels, executed in high relief with a cherub and trophy motif framed by flowing scrollwork. The extension of the decorative program into sculpted pearl grips is unusual and indicates a deliberate, unified artistic vision rather than routine embellishment. Mechanically, the revolver is a six-shot 5.7mm rimfire with fixed trigger guard and ejector rod. Condition remains excellent, with strong original finish and intact gold overlay throughout. The revolver is accompanied by its period burl walnut presentation case, green velvet lined, fitted for the revolver and accessories. Belle Époque Liège exhibition arms occupy a distinct niche between functional firearm and mechanical objet d’art. This example represents an unusually elaborate and cohesive expression of late 19th century Belgian decorative gunmaking and stands among the most ambitious works attributable to H. Leukers.
