1851 Colt Navy Navy with rare Richards-Mason.38 CF Conversion
Description: This is a fine and rare USN martially marked Colt M1851 Navy model revolver. These M1851 revolvers were produced from 1852 thru 1859, and during that time period, about 2,750 M-1851 Navy cvaliber revolvers were purchased by the US Navy. This revolver is stamped with the Naval Inspector's initials "J.L.H." and "U.S.N." on the bottom of the backstrap, indicating inspection by Commander James L. Henderson, who inspected small arms at Norfolk from June of 1857 through April of 1861, and indicating it's issuance to the US Navy. The Navy subsequently contracted with the Colt factory to alter some 2,200 revolvers to accept metallic cartridges, of which about 1,000 are estimated to have been the Colt M1851 Navy. This pistol is serial numbered 58933 on its principal parts, giving it an 1856 production date and putting it in the 55500 to 62000 serial number range of the Navy’s first contract purchase of 2,000 revolvers. The revolver has a second inspector's marking as well with the inspector's initials "R.W.M." and an anchor symbol on the bottom of the barrel, indicating inspection by Richard W. Meade. This revolver was issued as a percussion revolver to the US Navy, under the backstrap inspector's mark of JLH/USN, and it was later returned by the Navy to the Colt factory for conversion to .38CF with the rare Richards-Mason centerfire conversion under the Naval conversion contract. It was then re-issued back into naval service under the RWM inspector's mark. The barrel number does not match the frame/backstrap numbers, and this is common to revolvers sent back for a second trip to the Colt factory, as many part numbers were not matched during the conversion/refurbishment contract, as well as some parts receiving some softening of the original stampings from the Colt factory polishing/rebluing effort. The revolver is in excellent mechanical shape, with an absolutely tight hammer/cylinder lockup and a very crisp trigger. The bore is bright, with strong sharp rifling and very modest, light scattered powder fouling in the lands. Barrel edges are sharp and the ejector has the Colt bullseye head. The screwheads are not marred. The cylinder scene is lightly visible and the cylinder has a slight drag mark around it's circumference. The frame has aged to a dull patina and the bluing on the barrel, backstrap and cylinder has aged to an almost even patina to match the frame patina. The grips, while they are not officially "naval", are finely checkered, retain almost all the original finish and have no chips or marring. Overall, this is an excellent example of a scarce Naval issued Colt M1851 Navy in good to fine condition that has been factory converted to .38CF under the Richards-Mason patent. The pictures are the best description of this fine and rare "Navy Navy" conversion, and this revolver will be a wonderful addition to your Colt revolver collection. Sold as a collector piece only. Payment via personal check/postal Money Order ONLY; no credit cards, bank checks, PayPal, etc.; revolver will be shipped after payment is cleared by the bank; email me for all questions and/or requests for additional pictures. $95 for shipping and insurance to lower 48 (will be shipped in a box/ hard case).
