1874 AINSWORTH US CAVALRY Revolver 45 COLT GOVT Peacemaker 1873 SAA Antique Single Action Army Made Two Years Prior to CUSTER’S LAST STAND
Description: 1874 AINSWORTH US CAVALRY Revolver 45 COLT GOVT Peacemaker 1873 SAA Antique Single Action Army Made Two Years Prior to CUSTER’S LAST STAND Here we present an antique Colt Single Action Army Revolver, manufactured in 1874 under the observation of Orville W. Ainsworth, the first Principal Sub-Inspector assigned to Colt by the War Department, in Hartford, Connecticut. The Colt SAA revolvers used by General George Custer and his men were manufactured in 1874, as is this example, though this one was from a later lot than those known to have been assigned to the 7th Cavalry. According to Kopec and Fenn in Colt Cavalry & Artillery Revolvers, a Continued Study the 7th Cavalry Colts were found almost exclusively in Colt Lots 5 and 6 representing serial numbers 4500-5504, 5505-6516, and 6517-7527. It is estimated that 252 to 300 Colt revolvers were lost in the Battle of The Little Big Horn to hostiles. The top of the barrel is marked with the one line Colt address “COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.” The left side of the frame is marked with the two line, two patent dates followed by the “U.S.” Ordnance acceptance marking. The bottom of the barrel ahead of the cylinder pin as well as the exterior of the cylinder are marked with an “A” an “P”. There is also an “A” on the trigger guard below the serial number and the top of the grip frame. These revolvers saw use throughout the Indian Wars as well as the Spanish American & Philippine American Wars. There is a lot of history here. The overall condition is very good. Dark patina throughout. The action is strong; the hammer holds the safety notch and full-cock but not half-cock at present. The bore is in very good condition: clean with strong rifling. The grip is solid and tight to the frame, showing honest use with some chipping at the bottom corners and the bottom skirt. The numbers match on the barrel, cylinder, frame, trigger guard, and grip frame. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 7-1/2 inches. Caliber: .45 Colt Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $8650 #227983 SOLD Antique: Yes |
