Here we present an antique Engraved Brooklyn Arms Co. Slocum Patent Pocket Revolver, made circa 1863-64 in Brooklyn, New York. Only about 10,000 were produced. Firearms technology was rapidly advancing in the 19th Century with Colt introducing his revolver, and Smith & Wesson introducing the “bored through” cylinder that allowed revolvers to be used with metallic cartridges. This development was the intellectual property of an inventor by the name of Rollin White, a former Colt employee who took his idea to Samuel Colt himself and was fired for his efforts. White found a buyer for his patent in Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson, giving their new company an enormous advantage for the next 12 years.

However, with the Civil War in full fury and arms supply and manufacturing what it was, many different inventors, mechanics and manufacturers popped up to take advantage of the need for arms. Many makers of revolvers attempted to design and manufacture their own concept, but ended up violating the Rollin White Patent, for which Smith & Wesson and Rollin White aggressively sued. Other companies came up with creative solutions to navigate around the patent and some succeeded. This is one of those success stories, at least in the sense that a functional revolver was created to use metallic rimfire ammunition without violating the patent. Each chamber slides in its channel. Though this relatively small pocket revolver was no official armament of the Civil War, like so many others, plenty of them were carried into battle by soldiers who purchased them privately.

This revolver features nice factory scroll engraving. The top of the barrel reads “B.A. CO. PATENT APRIL 14 1863”.

The overall condition is good. Original finish and patina. The action of the hammer and trigger are strong but the cylinder does not index at present. The bore is dim with strong rifling. The ivory grips are solid. The modern case is in very good condition.
