The revolver bears patent dates of September 7 and November 9, 1858, referencing design improvements developed by Ethan Allen. Allen & Wheelock revolvers were produced in several calibers, most commonly .32 RF, and featured octagonal barrels, walnut grips, and a distinctive side-hammer design. The revolvers were finished in blued steel, which often fades to a gray patina with age. Manufactured during the years leading into and during the American Civil War (1861–1865), revolvers of this type were commonly purchased privately by soldiers, officers, and civilians for personal protection. Although not a standard U.S. military issue sidearm, Allen & Wheelock revolvers saw period use alongside more widely known Colt and Remington models. These firearms represent an important period in American arms development, when smaller manufacturers competed to improve revolver technology during a time of rapid innovation in the mid-1800s. Condition: 4” Octagon barrel with a nice bore, light oxidation and still showing strong rifling. Still retains small amounts of the original blue with the remainder turning to an antique gun-metal gray.. The smooth walnut grips have traces of the original varnish showing and a few very minor dings. Barrel markings are legible and all numbers are matching. Mechanically works nicely as it should in single and double action with half and full-cock positions. Lock-up is very tight and timing is very good. The firearm exhibits the hallmarks of Allen & Wheelock’s craftsmanship, with a solid frame design and clean mechanical lines. The early serial number and compact configuration add to its collectibility, making this revolver a desirable piece for collectors of American percussion-era firearms. Its survival in presentable condition provides a tangible link to the ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit of mid-19th century American gunmaking.
