Belgian S&W Copy Top Break Revolver .44 WCF
Description: Most of these revolvers were manufactured between the 1890s and 1920. The issue was that Belgium did not have many well trained metallurgists at this time. The top break revolvers they built in the .44 WCF did not have a sufficient gap between the actual firing pressure and the maximum tolerable pressure the revolver could handle. Continued firing of these revolvers with factory .44-40 ammo would wear them out eventually. The U.S. Krag rifle had similar issues with its .30-40 Krag ammunition. Any ammunition hand loaded to even a 10 percent higher pressure than factory loads would frequently result in cracks in the Krag’s bolt lug (continued shooting would eventually result in the lug failing and the bolt would then fly into the shooter’s face – not a pretty picture). These revolvers are usually stamped with just “Belgium”, “For .44 Winchester Cartridge”, a serial number, and some acceptance stamps, but no manufacturer’s mark. As such, it is difficult if not generally impossible to determine the identity of the original manufacturer. The base pin spring appears to be missing. This normally sits in a recess on top of the base pin (the cylindrical part the cylinder rotates around) and helps the cylinder catch keep the cylinder in place when the action is opened. As a general rule, the cylinder catch will keep the cylinder in place while the extractor does its job. Despite the missing spring, the cylinder spring still rotates correctly although it is a tad loose. The bore exhibits some pitting, but still exhibits a good amount of rifling. There is really no finish remaining which is not unusual for a firearm of such age. There is some minor pitting in places but nothing serious. The wooden grips are in fairly good chape for their age. All of the screws seem to be in great shape with the exception of the trigger guard screws which have some wear on the edges of the slot. It is a shame that better materials were not used in the manufacture of these revolvers as they are quite beautiful. Its interesting to note that, while the gun is a copy of the Smith & Wesson Double-Action Top Break revolvers, the hammer and trigger are styled more after the Webley series of revolvers.
