Description: Civil War era Antique Moore’s Patent Firearms Co. S.A. Belt Revolver. (1861-1863) Historical Context: The Moore's Patent Firearms Company: The Moore's Patent Firearms Company was a short-lived but significant firearms manufacturer based in New Haven, Connecticut. The company was founded by Christian Moore, who developed a line of small-frame revolvers and other firearms in the early 1860s. While the Moore's revolvers were not as widely produced as some of the more famous models of the Civil War era, they still gained popularity among soldiers and civilians alike, owing to their compact size and ease of use. Moore’s revolvers were primarily privately purchased and were used by Union officers and enlisted men during the Civil War. Their design was distinctive, featuring brass frames and decorative engravings, which set them apart from other sidearms of the time. Production ceased after just a few years, with the company ultimately being overshadowed by larger manufacturers such as Colt and Remington. Though the company itself did not survive long, the Moore’s Patent Firearms Company holds an important place in the history of Civil War-era firearms, and its products remain sought after by collectors today.
