COLT 1871-1872 OPEN TOP REVOLVER 44 RIMFIRE SHIPPED TO FRANK DeGRESS OF WEXELL & DeGRESS
Description: The item for sale is a Colt 1871-1872 Open Top Revolver. The revolver is chambered for the 44 Henry Rimfire cartridge. The Colt Archives Letter which accompanies the sale of this revolver shows it was initially sold to Frank DeGress partner in the company Wexell & DeGress. This company had operations in both New York and Mexico City. The Colt 1871-1872 Open Top Revolver is a scarce and highly desirable Colt model. There were only approximately 7000 of these produced by Colt. Due to the harsh conditions, especially in Mexico these revolvers saw in service few have survived and many of the survivors saw their barrels shortened. This example has had the barrel shortened but expertly restored back to it's original length of 7 1/2". Many of these went south of the border.and this example may well have seen Mexican service. The revolver has matching numbers on the frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder and barrel. The numbers are faint however they are there. The gun is very good mechanically and functions as Colt intended. The walnut grips are outstanding in both appearance and fit. The serial number is 2672. The revolver shows areas of nickel plating which may further support this having seen service in Mexico. The revolver has an eye appealing patina finish.
