Colt Model 1895 New Navy 38 Double Action Revolver Mfd in 1897
Description: Antique Colt New Navy Double Action Revolver in .38 Colt with 4 1/2" Barrel and checkered hard rubber grips (US Navy Style with the large COLT font). The serial number is in the 87,000 range which dates to 1897 Manufacture. Nice 3 line barrel address with 1884, 1888, and 1895 Patent Dates. Left side of the barrel is marked "COLT D.A. 38". The US Army and US Navy purchased these in various contracts during the 1890's with 6" barrels. These shorter 4 1/2" DA's sold on the civilian market were often preferred by Police Officers, Guards, etc. A couple of years ago, we had a similar 4 1/2 that was marked "Tacoma Police Dept" on the side of the frame that was shipped in 1898...presumably for additional police who were needed during the Klondike Gold Strike in the Yukon. Tacoma was last stop on the railroad and it flooded with hundreds of thousands of prospectors both going and coming from the Yukon. These Double Actions were not only fast to fire, they were far easier to load with its swing-out cylinder compared to the Colt Single Action. Of course, its achilles heel was the .38 Long Colt Cartridge which was found to be under-powered when the United States Army occupied the Philippines following the Spanish American War. This lead to the development of the Colt 1911 in .45 ACP but that didn't stop these .38 DA's from having long service lives as many saw service in World War 1 with the US Navy and some are even shown in inventory as late as World War 2 according to records in the National Archives. Civilian-wise, we've seen a few of these DA's with Railway Express Agency markings which was the Federal Consolidation of the Private Express Agencies during World War 1 where companies like American Express and Wells Fargo were bought out when the railroads had to be nationalized during the War. To see an early DA marked "REA" meant these were still being used to guard Express Rail Cars into at least the 1920's. Overall, this revolver is in NRA Antique Good Condition. Originally, this revolver was blued but the metal has been cleaned at some point which is smooth overall, a little frosty in places, with sharp edges, and very good markings. The grips are in Fine condition with sharp checkered and nice COLT logos. No chips or cracks. Some nice original fire blue can be found on the grip screw, otherwise, everything is pretty much silvery grey on this revolver. Front sight is still tall and hasn't been trimmed down. The action still cylces in double and single action modes. The bore is typical of most 19th century weapons that used black powder. It has some light scattered pits towards the chambers so it starts out Fair+ while the front half of the bore is Good... a little brighter with little to no pitting. Just a decent example of an early Colt Swingout Double Action and will display well with the brighter metal. It would also be an ideal candidate for a restoration as the markings and edges are still sharp. Antique, No FFL required under Federal Law. State laws vary and we cannot ship this as an antique to NY, NJ, DC, Chicago, or HI. Sorry, no International Sales. Buyer must be 21 years of age and a law-abiding US Citizen. $20.00 shipping.
