ENGRAVED British Antique T.K. BAKER Transitional Caliber .44 Revolver
Description: ENGRAVED British Antique T.K. BAKER Transitional Caliber .44 Revolver The Link between Pepperboxes and Revolvers Here we present an antique T.K. Baker of London, England made circa the mid-1850s. This revolver was patented by Thomas Kerslake Baker. He was awarded British Registered Design No. 3230 on April 24, 1852, for his long spur hammer. The back strap has the serial number ("No. 1389.") marked in a foliate panel. The nipple shield has a fine knurled forward edge. Fitted with two-piece fine walnut grips. The frame is of German silver and nicely engraved. This revolver is considered a “transitional” revolver, transitioning from the Pepperbox design (a barrel cluster in which each chamber has its own barrel) to what we would consider a more conventional Revolver with a single barrel and a cylinder with individual chambers rather than a barrel cluster. You can see the resemblance to the pepperbox with the cane-like grip and the long and relatively flat hammer that operates from the top rather than the rear, as well as the cylinder, which simply appears as a shortened barrel cluster. This example is marked "T.K. BAKER/LONDON" in a foliate panel on the right side. Additional scrollwork is found on the buttcap and lower section of the back strap. The top of the frame reads “REGISTERED/APRIL 24, 1852” under the hammer. Birmingham proofs are located on the cylinder and barrel. The overall condition is fair. The action (hammer/trigger) is strong, though the cylinder does not index properly. There are no remaining nipples in the cylinder. The bore is dark and dusty with age.
