Here we present an antique Engraved Forehand & Wadsworth “Swamp Angel” .41 Caliber Rimfire Revolver, made circa 1880 in Worchester, Massachusetts. Yes, you read that right! The revolver was a small, self-defense weapon, ideal for potent conceal and carry in the closing decades of the tumultuous 19th Century. It would have been going head to head with the Colt House Pistol and the like. Many of the smaller, perhaps less name-recognizable companies put interesting names on the top strap of their wares.
The years following the American Civil War saw a large number of companies that produced small, inexpensive metallic cartridge handguns. Product lines ran from copies of firearms by established manufacturers such as Smith & Wesson and Colt including deringers, pepperboxes, spur trigger, and folding trigger pocket revolvers. Some companies manufactured arms under a variety of different names. Corporate names still familiar today saw their beginnings during this post-Civil War period, including Harrington & Richardson and Iver Johnson. Other companies, such as Forehand & Wadsworth, Hopkins and Allen, and Merwin Hulbert & Co. prospered for a time before eventually fading.
The overall condition is fine. Original finish. Sharp engraving. The action is excellent. The bore is bright and has sharp rifling. The grips are solid and in near fine condition. The numbers on the cylinder and grip frame match, 6195, while the number under the barrel is 6194; given that the barrel is only one digit off, has matching engraving, finish, and amount of wear, not to mention these revolvers are rare, our conclusion is that this was a factory mistake and this is how it was sold. A very interesting revolver!
