Pond Revolvers Lucius W. Pond was a Massachusetts-based inventor and manufacturer active during the American Civil War. Known for producing small, innovative pocket pistols, Pond's work was directly influenced by other front-loading revolver designs of the era - notably those of Moore's Patent Firearms Co., which were subject to legal action by Smith & Wesson for patent infringement on the bored-through cylinder used with metallic cartridges. Pond's revolvers featured a clever workaround: Instead of a bored-through cylinder like Smith & Wesson's, his design used removable chambers which loaded from the front and were then inserted into the cylinder. This circumvented the Rollin White patent and still allowed the use of .32 rimfire metallic cartridges - a major advancement at the time. His revolvers were relatively well-made, often sporting brass frames and blued steel components, and were marketed toward soldiers and civilians during the Civil War. Although they were never adopted as official military sidearms, many found their way into the hands of Union soldiers as privately purchased sidearms. Due to low production numbers (approx. 5,000), especially compared to larger manufacturers like Colt and Smith & Wesson, Pond's revolvers are now scarce and desirable among collectors - particularly when they retain original parts, finish, and legible markings.
