With Great Cylinder Scenes!

Here we present a set of antique Engraved Manhattan Arms Pocket Revolvers in .22 Rimfire, made in Newark, New Jersey circa the 1860s. This small, 7 shot .22 revolver was a direct copy of the successful Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 Second Issue Revolver. While the making of the American Standard Tool (the successor to Manhattan) revolver commenced after S&W’s Rollin White patent expired in 1869, the Manhattan Firearms Mfg. Co. made direct and quality copies of the S&W pistol without any regard to their patent infringement. The Manhattan Co. became part of AST in 1868 after briefly closing its doors. Interestingly, Manhattan was also famous for its blatant copies of Colt’s patents. In some ways, this is not terribly different than what goes on today in the firearms industry. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

The cylinder scene on these revolvers features settlers and Native Americans in a desperate fight. Cylinder scenes served multiple purposes at this time, primarily to make a gun difficult to forge, but certainly you can see the aesthetic value and the advertising that this one does for itself. A fascinating, if dark and gruesome, peek into mid-19th century America.

The top of both revolvers is marked “MANHATTAN FIRE MF’G. CO. NEW YORK”. Each of these bears nice factory engraving. These come in a neat little wooden box that has been fitted with a form fitted block to display them. This would be a great candidate for some felt to make it a real looker.

The overall condition of the first is good, while the second is very good. Each has a mixed patina. Markings are clear on both. The engraving is clearer on the second. The grips are the first are shy. The bores are in good shape with visible rifling. The actions are strong.
