Rare Smith and Wesson Model One, 1st Issue, Early Type w/Bayonet Latch
Description: The world's first successful cartridge gun, this very early Smith and Wesson Model One, First Issue was made in August, 1858 with the seldom seen early Bayonet Style Barrel Latch which were only found on the first 1000+ examples. This one is serial number 1010. Shortly after this was made, S&W went to a coiled spring latch. It has the early large revolving recoil shield with internal ratchet. The reason they used this because the early copper cased cartridges which were very similar what we know today as the .22 short, would bulge from the back after being first and would prevent the cylinder from rotating. S&W solved this by making the recoil shield turn with the cylinder. As cartridges improved, the recoil shield size was reduced and finally done away with altogether. It also has the early 3 groove rifling. Later in production, they went to 5 grooves. In all, there are 6 distinct variations of the Model One with 11,671 produced called Type 1 through Type 6. Over the past 25 years, I've found Types 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. This one is a Type 2 and only the second example we've come across. I believe there were only a couple hundred Type 1's and if you can find one (I've only seen one or two in big s), you can expect to pay in the $10,000-20,000 range. This one is in NRA Antique Good Condition with about 30% original silver plate remaining on the brass frame. The cylinder and barrel have turned to a dark patina with a few light pits here and there. The very lightly rolled Smith and Wesson address on the top rib of the barrel is long gone. The Patent date on the cylinder is mostly gone, however, the "1855" part of the Rollin White Patent is still intact if you know where to look. Serial number on the brass bottomstrap is still in good condition with matching numbers on the grips, barrel, and cylinder. Bore is so so with scattered pitting. but the 3 groove rifling is still intact. Action works correctly and the barrel to frame fit is tight with no wiggle. Good hinge...luckily as many of these were blown apart from previous owners trying to fire modern smokeless ammunition; a big No No on an 1850's vintage gun. The grips are in good condition with no chips or cracks but there is a repair to one panel where there was a diagonal chip missing. Very well done and not visible from the outside...you'd have to pull them off and view the inner panels to see it. See Photo. A rare and Historic gun with a low survival rate! In my life, this is the second one I've come across with an early bayonet latch. Buyer must be 21 years old. No sales to NJ, NY, Chicago, DC, HI. Sorry, no International Sales. $20.00 shipping.
