SMITH & WESSON FRONTIER .44-40 DOUBLE ACTION TOP BREAK, 6 ½” BARREL, #9XXX, ANTIQUE
Description: FRONTIER .44-40 DOUBLE ACTION TOP BREAK, 6 ½” BARREL, #9XXX. These big revolvers were made with 1/8” longer cylinders and frames than the standard .44 Russian caliber double actions. They were also serial numbered in their own series with only 15,340 made between 1886-1913 (all frames for this model were made before 1898 and all are therefore antique and no FFL is required for transfer). This example came out of Helena, Montana and no doubt has a great history in it! Overall an uncleaned gray/brown metal with some very aged blue in the most protected small areas. All numbers match on the butt, cylinder, barrel latch and barrel. Unaltered front sight and fine mechanics. Grips show normal wear with the right grip showing more wear- typical of guns worn in holsters with the right grip exposed. There is a small bit of added hard rubber grip material added to the lower edge of the right grip (must have been a shallow chip there that did not go all the way through) that is so well done and blends so well that I owed this revolver for some time before I ever noticed it! Fine correct markings and fine bore. The 6 ½” length was the longest offered on this model- most that I have seen seem to be the 5” length. I think that had I been in Montana in the 1890s I probably would have chosen one of these as my main holster gun…until the Colt New Service arrived on the scene!
