Marshall Marked Civil War Era Colt 1860 Army .44 Caliber Mfg. 1862 **4 Screw for Shoulder Stock**
Description:
Successor to the Third Model Dragoon, the Model 1860 Army ranks third in total number produced of the various models of percussion Colt handguns. It was the major revolver in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War, and 127,156 of the Model 1860 Army were acquired by the Union government for that conflict. This Model 1860 Army is in fair condition given its age and overall use. It features an 8 inch round barrel with a six shot revolving cylinder and has the fourth frame screw and cuts for a shoulder stock. This particular revolvers serial number falls in the number range for government procurement during the Civil War and is the Army model as it features the fourth frame screw which was only used for the U.S. Army's shoulder stock with the correct U.S. arsenal stamps present on the individual parts of the firearm. It is an all numbers matching frame, barrel, cylinder, wedge and backstrap. The action functions and the lockup is surprisingly tight for a revolver from this era. The original wedge has been shimmed to maintain tightness between the barrel and frame. The finish is worn with most of the scene only partially visible on the cylinder and the bore is frosted and worn, typical for a Civil War conflict weapon. Mechanically the firearm is in good working order and the nipples are clean and free of debris. The walnut one piece grips are in relatively good condition, showing similar wear to the handgun, and feature a carved initial. Which is commonly found on Confederate captured Union arms. It does feature some unit markings on the grips but they are too worn to identify. Overall this is an excellent example of a classic Civil War sidearm and would be a perfect addition to any collection.
