Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique engraved Springfield Arms Company Double Trigger Pocket Model Percussion Revolver, manufactured circa 1850-51 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Springfield Arms Company existed only for a brief period in 1850 and 1851, making revolvers designed by its chief engineer, James Warner, before being driven out of business by Colt patent lawyers. During that time, Springfield Arms, which had no relation to the arsenal, made models in .28, .31, and .36 caliber and with a variety of barrel lengths and other features, including a well-designed safety notch to allow the guns to be carried fully loaded safely. According to Flayderman Guide, 9th Edition, page 373, only about 100 of these double trigger models were made. Like many promising early American revolver designs, Springfield's line of weapons was effectively smothered in the crib by Colt's patent on revolving cylinder weapons. 

Warner designed two different revolvers, one with two triggers and one with only one trigger. On the one trigger models, he was blatantly infringing on Colt’s Patent and only made 125 of these. On the two trigger models, in an attempt to avoid patent infringement, Warner separated the cylinder rotation and firing mechanisms into two different triggers. The front trigger would rotate and lock the cylinder, and then it would trip the rear trigger which released the sear and fired the gun. This was not sufficient to save him from copyright infringement suits, though, and only about 100 of the double-trigger revolvers were made.

Out of the 225 total revolvers manufactured, 125 single trigger and 100 two triggers, this example is one of the few built, and realistically, how many total are known existing out of only 100 of these double triggers? Very few. Here is a great opportunity to pick up an extremely scare early 1850s revolver that you won’t see around very often.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is dark, good for its age. Solid grips with less than average wear. Cylinder etching remnants are present. Mixed gray patinas. A nipple or two have been damaged.
