Colt Brevette
Description: Colt Brevette Model 1851 Navy revolver. European and American gunmakers were making unlicensed (illegal) copies of Colt’s guns from the first Paterson days, although they really took off in popularity with copies of the 1851 Navy model. Colt reacted to this by setting up a licensing fee system and hiring an agent to represent the company at the Liege proofhouse in Belgium, where it was possible to intercept most of the illegitimate guns. Those guns legally licensed by Colt would be stamped “Colt Brevete” or “Colt Patent”. This revolver is made by C. Clement and is serial numbered "111488" on barrel, frame, and triggerguard. The loading lever has SN#11 while the frame has an additional number 2871 stamped on its right side. The butt is engraved "J. NIKITITS ERBEN" and "38 CAL" on the left trigger guard shoulder. The top flat of its 7 1/2" barrel is stamped "CAP SYSTEM MANUFACTURED BY C. CLEMENT". Barrel proofed on sides with crowns and Belgian proofs. The cylinder is marked "CLEMENT ARMS CO" and has numerous dings but I THINK the engraving is of a ship and harbor scene. The mechanics are functional but stiff due to old dried grease. Although there are no known Confederate purchases of these “Brevettes”, many quickly found their way into Rebel hands during the war. These Colt copies are a whole world of interesting collecting by themselves, and one that is largely ignored by most Colt devotees. LEGAL: No FFL or C&R license is required!
