Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver .31 Caliber
Description:
Successor to the Baby Dragoon Model, the Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver in .31 Caliber is a diminutive version of the Model 1851 Navy. Production began in 1850 and ended in 1873 with the production of the Single Action Army. A total of 340,000 were produced by the Hartford firm during the 23 year production time. The Model 1849 came in 3 inch, 4 inch, or 5 inch lengths with either a 5 or 6-shot cylinder and most were equiped with loading levers. The grips were made of one piece walnut. The frames were casehardened and came standard blued but nickel and silver plated models were offered. The trigger guard and straps were silver plated brass (standard) or steel (either blued or silver plated). This Model 1849 Pocket comes with a 4 inch barrel, 5-shot cylinder, brass trigger guard with brass straps. It is all numbers matching with a relatively tight lockup and functional action. The bore has solid visible rifling but has a large pit half-way down the barrel. The bluing has been removed overtime, but this is a nice Colt overall. It would be an excellent piece for a Civil War or early American small arms collection.
