Description: FANTASTIC CYLINDER SCENE Allen & Wheelock Navy Rev Civil War Period Antique Sidehammer Revolver Here we present an antique Allen & Wheelock Navy Percussion Sidehammer Revolver, made in Worcester, Massachusetts, circa 1858-1861. This Navy model is a six-shot, .36 caliber sidearm. The cylinder is beautifully engraved with a scene of forest animals and a great stag being chased by a hound. There are no known government contracts, though the Army Ordnance Department apparently did purchase 338 on the open market. Allen's design was clearly influenced by Colt's 1855 “Root” revolver, adopting the top strap above the cylinder for strength, rigidity and thus accuracy, and the side-hammer rather than the center hammer more usual on the Colt models. The overall condition is very good. The cylinder scene is fantastic. The bore is dark with nice rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp.
