Antique French AN IX Gendarmerie percussion pistol, originally made at Maubeuge armory, later converted to percussion, dated 1817.

Description:

Antique French AN IX Gendarmerie Percussion Pistol, made at the armory at Maubeuge at the turn of the 19th Century. Originally designed for French light cavalry units including Hussars and Chasseurs as a flintlock, this example has been converted to percussion ignition, a common modification to modernize obsolete firearms. The pistol fired a 16.54mm (.60 caliber) lead ball and was effective at close range, typically 5-10 meters, making it useful against packed infantry formations. This pistol is marked “Manuf. Roy de Maubeuge” on the lock and dated 1817. SN 135 marked on top of the barrel, on the ram rod, and left side of the stock. The top of the barrel tang is marked “M. an 9”. Inspection marks abound throughout. Smooth bore.

Condition:

G/VG as appropriate to a military flintlock pistol later converted to percussion. The lightly cleaned in the white metal has spotty discoloration, but no significant pitting. Larger markings are crisp, those on the barrel tang are difficult to discern. Stock remains in high condition without splits or cracks. Generally bright, smooth bore. Correct manual mechanics. A very attractive French percussion converted pistol from the early-mid 1800s.
