Manhattan .36 caliber Series III bear a close resemblance to the Colt Model 1851 Navy and the Colt Model 1849 Pocket. Close comparison shows the Manhattan to feature all the same advantages as the Colt but also some updated safety features, namely the addition of indexing marks between the chambers allowing the hammer to rest without the danger of an accidental discharge. The Series III revolvers feature a six inch barrel, a five-shot cylinder, brass trigger guard and brass backstrap. These were commonplace on the battlefields of the American Civil War even though very few were actually purchased by the U.S. or C.S. goverments. This Manhattan .36 caliber Series III is all matching (frame, barrel, trigger guard and backstrap). It is mechanically functional, albeit with a rough, loose action. It has a repaired left grip and a crack in the barrel near the wedge key.
