Mass. Arms Company Maynard-Primed Manually-Rotated Pocket Revolver "Rare
Description:
SOLD Pending Funds / Massachusetts Arms Company Maynard-Primed Manually-Rotated Pocket Revolver, serial #186, cal. 28, has a 2 5/8" octagon barrel with a lightly pitted bore and strong rifling. This is a scarce and interesting little pocket revolver utilizing the Maynard tape priming system, manual indexing of the cylinder and was built in limited numbers, many converted to automatic rotating cylinder. The frame has light floral engraving on the primer cover and left side, the metal surfaces having been cleaned to pewter with remnants of some old peppery pitting and oxidation staining. The cylinder is toned to brown showing scattered peppery pitting with subdued floral etching still visible. The barrel is mostly brown with a few stray patches of original blue in the protected areas in addition to signs of light cleaning, and handling marks. The brass triggerguard has about 97% original silver plate that has tarnished and shows edge wear. The smooth walnut factory grips rate about good with moderate soiling and handling marks on the back of the right panel. The barrel is numbered "396", and the remaining numbered parts are “186”, no numbers are visible on the cylinder. The topstrap is marked "MASS ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS" and "MAYNARDS PATENT SEP. 22, 1845" around the tape cover stud. The barrel lock is a little loose and the action is functional. Besides being scarce, it is an interesting development in firearms technology. The overall condition on this scarce revolver as described and photographed is good plus - very good condition. Inv. : # 12-160
