At the height of the civil war, the government of the Union commissioned the development of a new revolver. The goal was to develop a new standard weapon for officers and cavalry. The American government supported the idea of Roger & Spencer (Willowvale / NY) and ordered on November 29, 1864 Revolvers in an edition of 5,000 pieces. The production of revolvers was not new to Rodger & Spencer & Co., the company had made in the late 1850s Revolver for the company "CSPettengill" and 1863-1864 for "Austin T. Freeman". The new revolver combined and improved certain properties of previous weapons. New was the single action lock, based on Augustast T. Freeman's patent no. 36861 of November 4, 1862. Production started only in 1865 and the end of the war preceded mass production. That is why the weapon was used only sporadically in the civil war. This six-shot .44 caliber percussion single action revolver was manufactured by the Rogers & Spencer Co. of Willow Dale, New York, and was part of a 1864 Ordnance Department contract for 5,000 revolvers. Most of these Rodges & Spencer revolvers were delivered after the conclusion of hostilities in April 1865 and were never issued. The top strap is marked "ROGERS & SPENCER /UTICA N-Y". The matching serial number is located on the bottom of the grip strap, the cylinder, the underside of the barrel, the loading lever, cylinder and the left side of the frame. Ordnance "B" sub-inspection marks are stamped on the barrel, frame, loading lever, cylinder, trigger guard, and grips. Cone front and frame notch rear sights, blue finish turning gray, with casehardened hammer and loading lever. Fitted with smooth walnut grips with a boxed "RPB" cartouche, Inspector Robert P. Barry, on the lower left side and each panel is numbered to the gun on the inside.
Production was quickly stopped due to a lack of demand. From the 5800 weapons produced, the government took over 5000 and provided it with parts of the army, the police, etc. These weapons are identifiable by inspector Mark RPB (for Robert P. Barry) pressed on the bottom of the left handgrip. Over all condition is NRA Antique Very Good. All original parts. The revolver is mechanically sound, operates and cycles correctly. The revolver shows old light pit. The grips show some light wood loss at the bottom edge of the grips. The screws are in very good condition. Serial Number 4981.
