Savage Navy Revolver with Original Holster (Confederate?)
Description: Sale Pending. This is a good solid example of a Civil War Savage Navy Percussion Revolver with what appears to be its original Confederate Holster. It don't know what I'm more intrigued by, the uniqueness of the revolver or how the holster was made! The gun is completely different from any revolver I've ever seen. It looks like it was the creation of a locomotive designer who did not follow the Colt crowd as its built like a piece of industrial revolution machinery more than an elegant handgun. However, you can see why soldiers liked them because once you get the hang of how it works, its really quite effective. The other reason we know they were well-liked is based on how hard they were used. Most of the ones I've seen over the years are usually in pretty rough shape. This one is exceptional and the mechanics are great! It uses a unique ring lever which indexes the cylinder and cocks the hammer at the same time. My guess here is that this would be operated by the middle finger while the index finger stayed on the trigger. That said, it's still a single action...you just never need to touch the hammer. In spite of its bulk, it's only .36 Caliber. 6 Shot Cylinder with rebated or stepped chambers. These were issued to the US Army, which this one was originally, the US Navy, and some were even purchased by the Confederacy early in the War. This Savage was found in Tennessee and comes with what appears to be a hand-made Confederate holster. Perhaps this was captured in the Western theater (TN/GA) as most Union cavalry units issued these Savages were from the Midwest. What I can say for certain is that its old and IT IS NOT A UNION ISSUED HOLSTER. It is handmade but built by someone who knew what they were doing. They started with a Colt pattern and then added an extended pouch to acomodate the lever lever loop and then reconfigured the flap to fold over the hammer and arch over the grip handle. It was very well done with nice stitching and even some light borderlines. The hand-hammered rivets for a small belt loop were made for a narrow belt. Definitely not Yankee. The gun itself is in NRA Antique Very Good Condition. Unlike many, it has great mechanics, a nice bore and solid original grips. The grips on these Savages were thin and highly prone to breakage. These are solid and there is even a trace of the original cartouche on the left panel along with a soldier's initials, "PF Mc". Union units that fought in the Western Theater did sometimes put their initials on their weapons although it was against regulations. If you did though, you had to pay the Gov't for defacing property so not many tried it! Cavalry were a little less strict by their very nature so its possible this is either a Union Soldier or a Confederate (who put their mark, initials, or name on nearly all of their weapons). The metal has turned to a soft grey patina with some original darkened finish on the recoil plate and trigger guard. The top of the frame has a crisp Savage Address and various parts still show nice clean sub-inspector initials. Original front and rear sights. Nice screws and the loading lever is nice and tight.
